LAS VEGAS — Celine Dion returns to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on June 7 to continue her current three-year run with the resort.
Dion will perform 70 shows per year. She sold out the first 20 concerts in March and April and played to more than 85,000 fans.“My knees were very shaky, my legs were definitely.,” Dion said about her first night at The Colossum. “I was anticipating that moment, but I was nervous, not scared, but I was nervous; I was very happy to be there.”
Her 90-minute set includes 31 band and orchestra members and features many of her hits. Her show also includes a cover of James Bond song and a tribute to pop start Michael Jackson.
Dion found it difficult to add in such well-known music from other artists, but she believes time and maturity help make the songs a good fit for her.
“I travel through music, different styles, and try to put myself in their shoes but also try to make it my own at the same time. So, I do my best,” Dion said.
She also covers some of her songs that have previously been left off of her set list including “Ne Me Quitte Pas” and “At Seventeen.” Dion believes she is better able to understand the meaning and emotion behind the words now.
“Maturity is a wonderful thing. I don’t think I would have loved to sing that song at 25- or at 30-years-old. I don’t think I was ready,” she said. “Suddenly understanding different emotions gives you different colors to be able to interpret on stage. It helps me grow, it makes me touch different colors of music and keeps it fun.”
The show is meant to be reminiscent of Old Hollywood, with band members wearing black tuxedos and cocktail dresses with the focus on the music itself instead of a large-scale production.
The show is directed by Grammy and Emmy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich whoe brings a different feel to the show than when Dion performed in The Colosseum between 2003 and 2007 and played to an audience of almost three million people throughout the run. Dragone Productions, the director of several Cirque du Soleil productions, created her show then titled “A New Day.”
The Colosseum was created specifically for Dion before her first string of shows. It cost $95 million to construct. The venue gives audience members the feel of an intimate show, despite its large size. Only 120 feet separate the stage from the furthest seat.
In between the final show in 2007 and her current run Dion went on her Taking Chances World Tour between 2008 and 2009, which took her to 93 cities on five different continents. More than three million fans attended her tour.
She also took a year off to spend time with her recently expanded family. Dion has three children, her son Rene-Charles, 10, and twin boys Eddy and Nelson, born last year.
Dion has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide since the beginning of her career, with albums recorded in French and English. She has also won more than 1,000 awards during her 30 years in the business.
