Dallas Convention Center awarded LEED EB Silver Certification
DALLAS — The Dallas Convention Center has achieved the LEED EB (Existing Building) Silver Certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.
The LEED rating system helps building owners and operator's measure operations, improvements and maintenance on a consistent scale in order to maximize operation efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. LEED EB addresses the operation and working of existing buildings.
The convention center's green building efforts include: alternative transportation options, energy efficient lighting with reduced mercury content; environmentally sensitive cleaning products and practices; reduction of indoor potable water through low-flow fixtures and the replacement of a cooling tower; and a comprehensive recycling program. The convention center has saved 58.7 percent on electricity consumption and 55.6 percent on the consumption of natural gas since the start of the project.

Brown awarded 2010 Distinguished Service Award
DENVER, Colo. — Banks Brown has been awarded the 2010 Distinguished Service Award by the Academy of Hospitality Industry Attorneys. The award will be presented at the Academy’s Fall Meeting on Nov. 5 in Las Vegas.
The Academy was formed in 1995 by a group of attorneys from across the United States who represents clients or serves in-house for companies in the hotel, travel, tourism, convention, meeting and restaurant industries.
In addition to offering industry-specific CLE programs twice a year, the association provides its members with a useful network of recognized and experienced hospitality attorneys and leaders.
Each year AHIA recognizes an attorney whose character and achievements exemplify the Academy of Hospitality Industry Attorneys’ commitment to promoting professionalism, education and improved communication within a network of highly skilled and experienced attorneys serving the hospitality industry. Hall named GM of Embassy Suites Cleveland
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Kenric Hall has been appointed General Manager of the 252-room Embassy Suites Cleveland Downtown, effective immediately.
Hall comes to Hilton Worldwide, Embassy Suites’ parent company, with more than 25 years of hotel management experience, having held positions in the areas of event management, food and beverage, and front desk operations. He brings to the property a strong familiarity of the Midwest, along with a proven track record of success in customer service, team building, and sales and marketing.
In his new role, Hall will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the hotel, along with overseeing the daily operations at the newly renovated all-suite property, located steps away from the renowned Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland Convention Center, Playhouse Square, Cleveland Art Museum, Great Lakes Science Center, and the Lake Erie Beach and waterfronts. In addition, the property will be within walking distance of the much-anticipated Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center, which is scheduled to open in 2013. [CONTINUED]
McLaughlin named director of event services at Morial Convention Center
NEW ORLEANS — Lois McLaughlin has been named director of event services at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center – the sixth largest convention center in the nation.
In her role as director, she will supervise the planning and execution of all events held at the Convention Center.
McLaughlin will head a team of nine Event Services managers who boast a whopping 136 years experience at the convention center, with five members serving 22 or more years.
A 23-year veteran of the hospitality industry, McLaughlin comes to New Orleans from the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, where she served as director of event services.
A notable accomplishments was in bringing the departments up to modern standards, which was instrumental in increasing efficiency and response time to the client base.
McLaughlin brings an in-depth knowledge of the convention industry to her new position, having served in various roles such as convention services manager, event coordinator and sales manager as she worked her way through the ranks, eventually serving as director of event services for Atlantic City Convention Center & Boardwalk Hall in New Jersey. Callarec named executive chef at Ritz-Carlton, SF
SAN FRANCISCO — The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco has named Patrick Callarec executive chef, following an extensive search to fill the sought-after hotel leadership position.
Callarec’s role will encompass all hotel-specific culinary activities, including dining in The Lobby Lounge, In-Room Dining, banquets and catering.
Born in France, Chef Callarec comes to San Francisco following ten high-profile years on Maui, first as executive chef for The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and then as owner of the award-winning Chez Paul Restaurant in Olowalu, two-time recipient of Honolulu Magazine’s Hale Aina accolade as Best Restaurant on Maui.

ASAE Chairman Hart honored with 2010 APEX Award
WASHINGTON — ASAE Chairman Velma Hart was honored with the 2010 APEX Award for Distinguished Service.
Presented by Black Meetings & Tourism magazine, the Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions, which have positively impacted travel and tourism. The Award was presented at the Travel Professionals of Color 8th Annual Conference, April 22. Hart is the first African American chairman of the ASAE Board.
“I’m extremely honored and humbled to be recognized with this highly-regarded Award,” said Hart, CAE, chairman, ASAE Board, and national finance director/chief financial officer, AMVETS National Headquarters. “There are still many challenges in terms of representation and inclusion in the association community, which we can resolve by working together. It will not happen overnight, but it will happen with foresight as we plan ahead to meet the needs of our global workforce. I’m so thankful for this recognition and for the work of Black Meetings and Tourism and Travel Professionals of Color for their continued work giving a strong voice to black professionals.”

all channels to attend NHS
NORWALK, Conn — The 65th annual National Hardware Show, which will take place May 4-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is expecting one of its strongest and most diverse line-ups of buyers in the Show’s 65-year history.
The attendee list is a veritable Who’s Who in important players in the Home Products industry, covering not only traditional retail and wholesale outlets but untraditional channels like grocery, mass, drug, catalog, Internet and international retailers.
This includes industry giants like Home Depot, Walmart, Sears, True Value, Costco, Sam’s Club, Ace Hardware and many more representing more than $237 billion in sales revenue or almost 90 percent of the industry total. All told, attendance is up more than 1 percent over last year — quite a feat in a challenging economy.
"Retailers and distributors are constantly looking for ways to stay ahead of the competition and deliver innovative unique products to their shoppers," said Ed Several, Group Vice President & Show Manager, National Hardware Show. WASHINGTON, D.C. — As they work with various suppliers in the meetings industry, many meeting professionals have no doubt said to themselves, “I wish I could help shape this service so it can help me even more in my business.”
That wish came true recently for members of the ConventionPlanit.com Meeting Planner Advisory Council, which spent a half day brainstorming about the popular online search engine and recommending ways to make it even more effective.

Companies receive national recognition

LAS VEGAS — KioskCom Self Service Expo and The Digital Signage Show have opened yet another successful conference at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. Phase one renovations complete at
San Jose Civic
Premier Downtown concert venue ready for next phase of improvement
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Team San Jose, in partnership with the San Jose Redevelopment Agency and Nederlander Concerts, announced they have reached substantial completion of the first phase of improvements at the San Jose Civic.
On February 23, the San Jose Redevelopment Agency Board approved a final capital budget and awarded a contract to Garden City Construction for the Phase 2 improvements.
The initial phase of restoration to the historic Downtown building, which started at the beginning of 2009, added new exterior LED lighting, new concession stands, new main level men's and women's restrooms, as well as refurbished mezzanine level restrooms, refurbished hardwood floors, a $1 million sound and High Definition video package, fresh interior and exterior paint, remodeled artist dressing rooms, increased access to the loading dock and wheelchair accessible seating on the second level.
The San Jose Civic also displays a new Wall of Fame with full-size photos of legendary artists who have performed in the building over the past 74 years including The Who, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Santana and Steely Dan. [READ MORE]

Broderick, Jones featured keynote speakers in Las Vegas
ATLANTA, April 20, 2010 —Two visionary industry experts have been selected to headline the LIGHTFAIR International 2010 Conference and Institute as the featured keynote speakers.
James Brodrick, PhD, and Stephen Jones will address solid-state lighting and the impact of integrated design on the AEC (architectural, engineering and construction) industry in a two-day lineup of dynamic keynote luncheons.
Jones takes the stage on Monday, May 10—the opening day of the Institutes—and Brodrick follows on Tuesday, May 11.

CEIR Releases 2010 Index
DALLAS — The Center for Exhibition Industry Research has released the CEIR Index, An Analysis of the 2009 Exhibition Industry and Future Outlook.
The 2010 Index reveals a year-over-year decline of 12.5 percent, four times greater than any prior year. Hope for recovery for the exhibitions and events industry is tinged with cautious optimism and the factors necessary for that recovery are explained in detail in CEIR’s newest Index publication.
More than 300 business-to-business exhibitions contributed data for this report. As an objective measure of the annual performance of the exhibition industry, the CEIR Index measures year-over-year changes in four key metrics to determine overall performance: Net Square Feet, Attendees, Exhibitors, and Revenue.
CEIR President and CEO Douglas L. Ducate, presenting the top level findings and outlook at the SISO CEO Forum on Monday, 12 April, said, "The 2010 edition of the CEIR Index represents a major step toward making it a more predictive tool for our industry. Exhibition industry stakeholders at all levels owe it to themselves to read at least the Overall sector."
Gary Shapiro, president & CEO, Consumer Electronics Association/CES, said, "2010 is our opportunity year. After a challenging 2009, we can benefit from the U.S. government’s new focus on growing exports by positioning our shows as opportunities to expand international exports." [READ MORE]

Are you happy with your trade show efforts? I am not asking if you are satisfied with your results but rather if your efforts bring you satisfaction. Exhibiting takes a lot of time, requires a tremendous amount of energy and puts you under a considerable amount of pressure to perform.
Exhibiting requires a herculean effort to be the best you can when you are meeting clients face to face. Are you happy doing what you do?
There is more to happiness than an occasional smile and a good belly laugh. We live in a culture that continually bombards us with the promise of instant happiness. If we drink the right beer, take the right pill, drive the right car, or land a new account, happiness can be ours. Yet, how many of us are truly happy?

Las Vegas to host 11th Global
Travel & Tourism Summit in 2011
LONDON, UK — April 13, 2010, London, UK – The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) will host next year’s Global Travel & Tourism Summit in Las Vegas.
