DALLAS — Chris Meyer, CEM, CMP, chairman of the International Association of Exhibitions and Events board of directors announced on March 9 that creation of a new social media entity.

Exhibitors misled at Expo! Expo!
DALLAS — The International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) and The International Center for Exhibitor and Event Marketing (The Center) have issued a warning to all members and exhibitors of Expo! Expo! IAEE's Annual Meeting & Exhibition after confirming indisputable evidence from several sources that Construct Data Publishers a.s. from Slovakia is actively and improperly soliciting exhibitors to participate in its fair guide "free listing."
The advertising solicitation is very cleverly composed and misleading. The offer is not a free listing at all but is an advertising order that if completed and signed, imposes a three-year-long advertising obligation costing the exhibitor several thousands of dollars.
IAEE President Steven Hacker, CAE, said, "IAEE vigorously condemns the activities of Construct Data Publishers a.s., and believes it constitutes an unfair infringement and improper intrusion into the business affairs of the IAEE. These illicit practices are confusing and detrimental to the business of IAEE and its members."
Additionally, Construct Data Publishers a.s. is in trademark violation of the use of IAEE's name and brand and has been instructed to immediately cease the solicitation of all past, present and future exhibitors who have participated or will participate in any IAEE events.
"Exhibitors and event marketers should be aware of these kinds of improper solicitations and should take note of the practice as well as refrain from acknowledging any "free listing" directory opportunities unless they the offer is legitimate," added The Center's Director Susan Brower, CMM, CCP. COMDEX relaunched as
virtual event
LONDON — COMDEX will make a comeback later this year as a virtual event. UBM, which acquired the brand as part of its acquisition of MediaLive Intl. in 2006, will relaunch COMDEX as a virtual event to be held Nov. 16-17, managed by its Everything Channel business.
At its height, COMDEX was the largest annual show in the industry with 1.2 million net square feet of exhibit space at an unprecedented $60 a square foot. Attendance peaked at 200,000, including exhibitors. For more than 20 years it was as dominant in the trade show industry as it was in the IT industry it served. Its last event was in 2003.
"The original COMDEX died because it stopped serving its core customers,” says David Levin, CEO of UBM. “We are giving COMDEX a future by going back to its past. Our virtual COMDEX is focused on serving the IT channel, value added resellers, ISVs and all those people and businesses who make up the IT distribution system. Virtual COMDEX works right alongside and complements the other products and services we provide for the Channel and for the wider technology industry.”
Why now? “The timing is right now,” said Nancy Hammervik, Senior Vice President, Events, Everything Channel. “COMDEX started out as a computer dealer expo with a focus on resellers, dealers and integrators and it became much more than that over time. There’s definitely an untapped market opportunity there. At the same time, we’re seeing an explosion in opportunities in virtual, so we thought it would be exciting to bring this big brand back to its roots and move it forward into the future.” [MORE]

Crowne Plaza Chicago
renovates ballroom
ROSEMONT, Ill. (PRWEB) March 18, 2010 — The Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel & Conference Center, 5440 N. River Rd., has taken another step toward total transformation with the opening earlier this month of the remodeled O’Hare International Ballroom.
In conjunction with the new ballroom opening, anyone who books an event at the hotel through June 30 will receive 10 percent off the total bill, according to Patty Connolly, Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare general manager.
The 23,500-square-foot ballroom — one of the largest column-free rooms in the O’Hare area – has new high-end décor with state-of-the-art LED chandeliers and finishes mirroring the property’s recently renovated guest rooms and suites.
More than 4,000 square feet of pre-function space has been added adjacent to the ballroom for staging registrations, pre-meal receptions (capacity: 400), dessert buffets, small-scale trade shows and similar events.
For maximum sound coverage, both the ballroom and the pre-function space have been equipped with a new 60-speaker sound system. Throughout, a new Lutron lighting system creates energy efficient, digitally controlled ambiance.

Do promotional products add
value to your exhibit plan?
Last month I posted a question on the TSEA (Trade Show Exhibitors Association) Group/Linkedin about the use of promotional products. Forty-five comments later and the discussion is still going strong. Comments ranged from those who thought promotional products were a waste of time and resources to those at the other end of the spectrum who found them very useful.
Tote bags, pens, mouse pads, lanyards, CD’s, note pads, candy, gizmo’s for your computer, stress balls, luggage tags, buttons, pins, card holders, golf tees, sweat bands, mugs… don’t you just love it? Lots of people do. Ask visitors why then attend certain shows or what they remember best and they say — “all those cool giveaways.”
