TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Hands-free headphones ideal
for noisy situations

By Trade Show Expo

ER-20The Etymotic’s ETY-COM headset meets the demanding communication needs of the trade show floor.  ETY-COM’s earphone frequency response extends beyond the typical low fidelity telephone bandwidth to produce exceptional sound.

The headset was designed to smooth the peaks in the frequency response that make sound harsh and uncomfortable at loud volume levels. We took the headsets onto the show floor and tested the noise isolating claim.

The headset did provide a noise free conversation.  Little to no background noise was heard in the conversation which would allow any exhibit staff to communicate freely. We did not have to stand in the isle talking so loudly that everyone around us could hear the conversation. This was a very positive advantage.

There was an initial adjustment to the earphones. They must fit snuggly in the ear and might seem uncomfortable for those that cannot tolerate invasive ear gear.  If you have a lot around your neck this headset would be a deficit, luckily it comes with a Smartwrap device which eliminates abandoning the headset altogether. The technology and science make it a useful show floor tool.

headphoneThe ER-20 High-Fidelity earplugs use patented technology that replicates the natural response of the ear canal so that sound heard with these earplugs is as clear as the original, just quieter. It picks up the talker's voice within a narrow range and rejects background noise that comes from outside that range. Clear, two-way conversations are possible even in very high background noise.

The earphone provides a 37 dB, averaged over the octave frequencies from 125 to 8000 Hz, allowing only the audio from the caller to enter the ear. As an earplug, it has a calculated noise reduction rating (NRR) of 24dB. The microphone provides 4 to 11 dB greater noise rejection than other microphones at the same location, and up to 25 dB more noise rejection than booms that are not close to the mouth.

Etymotic Research, Inc. (ER) is a research, development and manufacturing company located in Elk Grove Village, Ill. The name “Etymotic” (pronounced “et-im-OH-tik.”) means “true to the ear.” Established in 1983, ER’s mission is to design high-fidelity products to measure, improve and protect hearing. ER has developed and patented some of the most innovative hearing technology available today. For more information, visit www.etymotic.com.
