Record results at A+A 2009 with high international participation
CHICAGO — The recent staging of A+A 2009, International Trade Fair for Safety, Security and Health at Work, demonstrated that companies invest in the health and safety of their employees even in difficult economic times: 55,800 visitors (compared to 55,200 attendees in 2007) came to gather information on the latest trends for personal and occupational safety and health displayed by 1,541 exhibitors from 62 countries. This result is a new record in the history of the event.
Almost every fourth visitor came from outside of Germany, with increased participation particularly from non-European nations such as South American countries. The A+A Congress registered some 5,000 participants while the accompanying Conference of the International Labour Organisation (ILO/a UN sub-organization) attracted over 300 delegates (from about 60 countries).
Of the A+A 2009 exhibitor, 65 percent came from countries other than Germany with China, Italy, France, Great Britain, India, Pakistan, the U.S., the Netherlands and Taiwan as the leading foreign exhibitor nations. A total of 11 of the 37 U.S. companies exhibited their products within the successful North American Pavilion, organized by Messe Düsseldorf North America and co-sponsored by the National Safety Council (NSC).
“A+A has impressively confirmed its position as the leading international trade fair and congress for health and safety at work with high scores both in terms of exhibitors and visitors. Noteworthy is especially the visitor’s high level of decision-making competence,“ said Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf.
At A+A 2009, exhibitors showcased the entire range of products and services for personal and occupational safety - from protective items for individual body parts to complex security systems, from occupational medical care to ergonomic workplace design. The product highlights on display included a fully recyclable protective work jacket, a business suit fitted with wind-breaker membranes, protective clothing with integral UV-protection, ergonomic furniture for children’s day care centers as well as noise-absorbing pictures and the latest generation of highly sensitive gas measuring devices.
Pushy sales people have
no business at a trade show
By Barry Siskind
One of the things that drive trade show visitors crazy is pushy sales people. When visiting a show, the last thing visitors want to encounter are sales people who do not take the time to learn about their visitor’s unique situation before embarking on an over whelming spiel that includes information that has very little to do with their needs.
It’s called the pitch.
Think back to a time when you were a customer. You could have been shopping for anything: a new car, a winter jacket or something for dinner. Now pretend that you asked whoever was serving you for some information and that person took your question as a signal that you wanted to hear everything. What would your reaction have been?

Convene Green Alliance goes behind the scenes to see Green Initiatives at AAP conference
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Going behind the scenes at a major conference is one way to learn about successful green meeting initiatives.
That’s what the Convene Green Alliance did on October 19 in a Focus Forum at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center during the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition.
It was a “meeting within a meeting” that featured presentations from the AAP green meeting planning team and concluded with a tour of the AAP conference while it was up and running. The unique format allowed attendees to see firsthand the environmental sustainability initiatives and accomplishments of AAP in real-time.
Jared Cohen, Manager of Convention & Meeting Services for the American Academy of Pediatrics addressed Forum attendees with a candid presentation about AAP’s “not so green” history, and commentary on how the association has made its environmental commitment a priority over the last couple years and accomplished many of its sustainability goals. He described the importance of communicating the association’s expectations to host cities, the hotel community and vendors beginning with the RFP process.
