IAEE board calls
San Jose labor
program detrimental
DALLAS — Calling Team San Jose's recent seizure of all Teamster labor at the McEnery Convention Center a plan primarily designed to generate new revenue for that convention center, the board of directors of the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) is calling upon the city's Mayor and City Council to rescind the program immediately.
IAEE says that the new program eliminates competition and like most exclusive in-house services, is very likely to drive customers' costs much higher while driving down service levels. It also tramples upon an already existing collect bargaining agreement that was negotiated by the general service contractors who service most of the business in the McEnery Convention Center with Teamsters Local 85 that runs through the end of March 2011.
General service contractors who refuse to agree to the new exclusive labor program are not permitted to work in the building. If they do accept the terms of the new agreement they face grievances from Teamsters Local 85 who has already warned at least one contractor who has worked an event in the building under the new plan that they have violated their agreement.

COMPANY REBRANDING
hanleywoodCONNECT re-branding unveiled
DALLAS, TEXAS — Hanley Wood Exhibitions has announced the re-branding of its online networking and marketing system, CONNECT. Formerly associated with each of its events, the new version is now called hanleywoodCONNECT.

“Re-branding hanleywoodCONNECT allows us to align this product across all our events, as one of many integrated event experience platforms that differentiate Hanley Wood events in the marketplace,” says Nicole Buraglio, Director of e-Media for Hanley Wood Exhibitions.
The design and functionality of the online product has also changed and was released, along with the new logo and tagline. The new version can be seen on the Remodeling Show web site (www.theremodelingshow.com), and Hanley Wood Exhibitions plans to roll out the re-branding across all its shows over the next few weeks.
hanleywoodCONNECT is Hanley Wood’s proprietary social networking system, which allows exhibitors and attendees of its events to ‘find’ each other online and communicate before, during and after the show. Exhibitors and attendees are initially matched based on products/services they indicate they are seeking and/or carry.
They are then able to narrow their searches and mine Hanley Wood Exhibitions’ data to find the specific audience or supplier they’re looking for. hanleywoodCONNECT features include product searches, education session searches and bulk/one-to-one email and appointment request capabilities. A variety of promotional opportunities is also available, such as web banners, lead-generation programs, widgets, webinars, keywords, product categories and much, much more.
hanleywoodCONNECT, which is provided on each Hanley Wood Exhibitions tradeshow, is part of a value-add program for both exhibitors and attendees. No additional fees are charged for use of the service.

Marketech introduces RepConnect trade show, staffing solution
New offering keeps skilled sales reps in the field while improving exhibiting performance
WESTBORO, Mass. — Trade show and convention managers who are finding it difficult to adequately staff their exhibitions are meeting the challenge with RepConnect, a trade show and convention staffing solution now available from Marketech.
Through RepConnect, Marketech provides trained, experienced personnel who effectively engage, qualify and transition visitors to the exhibitor’s own on-site sales team. RepConnect serves exhibitors from a wide range of industries and is available nationwide.
“Many companies have fewer field-based sales representatives covering larger territories,” said Holly Stevens, project director for Marketech. “Using field-based reps as exhibit staffers takes these critical resources away from their primary responsibilities, which isn’t always an option or the optimal approach. RepConnect is the perfect solution for exhibitors who must adequately staff their exhibits at a time when the availability of internal resources is becoming increasingly limited.”
RepConnect is effective because it fosters teamwork between the RepConnect staff and the exhibitor’s own sales force. RepConnect staffers are skilled at engaging visitors who pass by an exhibit and are adept at drawing visitors into the booth.
Once engaged, RepConnect staffers probe to determine the visitor’s specific needs and interests and then transition qualified visitors to an appropriate member on the exhibitor’s internal sales team.
Effective engagement and qualification enables internal staffers to focus on those visitors who truly need their time and attention. With this focused approach, fewer internal resources are needed on site, and performance is enhanced while overall costs are reduced. For more information or to request a proposal, contact Holly Stevens at 205-807-5952 or holly@marketech360.com.
“At Marketech we understand our clients and the challenges they face, and we continually enhance our offerings to address an ever-changing environment,” said Marc Goldberg, founder and partner for Marketech. “With RepConnect we help our clients meet their goals while balancing other needs within their organization. We’re thrilled to add RepConnect to the collection of services available from Marketech.”

TSEA announces formation of Exhibitor Advocacy Committee
Polling results from TS2 attendees on issues effecting exhibitors at trade shows
CHICAGO — After polling members of the association and attendees at TS2, the Trade Show Exhibitors Association (TSEA) confirmed the need to officially form an Exhibitor Advocacy Committee. People were asked to choose up to three (3) answers from a wide variety of topics that members of TSEA had voiced distress about this year. The polling showed:
- 34 percent felt lack of choices for exhibitor appointed contractors were a top concern.
- 32 percent want independent 3rd party audits of convention attendees to help them make informed decisions about what shows will provide the best returns on their investment.
- 26 percent felt unfair convention housing policies caused the most problems for exhibit managers.
- Almost 50 percent of healthcare industry exhibitors believe show hours opposed by education, entertainment, meals, etc is a policy of many trade shows that needs to be changed.
One TSEA member was not surprised that only 15 percent of participants responded that encryption of attendee’s badges was an issue.
“Most exhibitors do not even know they can own lead retrieval equipment and customize it to feed directly into their internal sales and customer databases. Show management has done such a good job of ‘training’ exhibitors to rent their official show equipment that they do not even investigate the possibility or understand that some shows block the ability by encrypting their badge. Capturing leads is a key objective of exhibiting at tradeshows. By blocking the ability to use your own personal lead retrieval system they (show management) are impeding exhibitors’ ability to harness the potential business from attendees who visit their booth. It is critical that event badges be legible by all lead management scanners.”

Study reveals link between trade show business travelers and business growth
Approximately 40 percent of prospective customers converted to new customers
as a result of face-to-face meetings
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new study conducted by global research firm Oxford Economics establishes the first clear link between business travel and business growth.
The result show a strong relationship between a company's investment in business travel — to meetings, trade shows, conferences, incentive and sales meetings — and its profitability.
For every dollar invested in business travel, businesses experience an average $12.50 in increased revenue and $3.80 in new profits, according to the findings. It is the first time that the ROI of business travel has been successfully measured.
The results come at a time when organizations are planning their 2010 fiscal year and federal policymakers are looking for evidence to support initiatives to stimulate the global economy. The study found that curbing business travel can have a significant negative impact on corporate profits. The average business in the U.S. would forfeit 17 percent of its profits in the first year of eliminating business travel, and it would take more than three years for profits to recover.
"We know that business travel is good for the economy, but this study quantifies the return on investment that businesses experience when they hold exhibitions and events," said IAEE President Steven Hacker, CAE. "The Oxford Study found that more than half of business travelers stated that 5-20 percent of their company's new customers were the result of trade show participation and executives estimate that 28 percent of current business would be lost without face-to-face meetings. These results further underline and reinforces the validity of in-person meetings."

Trade Show Internet aims to end service provider monopoly
SAN FRANCISCO — Trade Show Internet, a Bay Area start-up, is offering an economical alternative to on-site internet access in an effort to alleviate the monopoly that has been imposed on trade show exhibitors for years. The company rents a portable device which allows up to 64 users to connect to the internet virtually anywhere in the United States for a single fee of $299. Previously, trade show exhibitors were given a single option to connect to the internet, often costing upwards of $1,200 per computer.

In its first full year of operation, Trade Show Internet has gained overwhelming support from the trade show industry and has provided its proprietary Internet Package to exhibitors at major events such as the National Restaurant Association trade show in Chicago, the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas, InfoComm in Orlando, HiTec in Anaheim, SemiCon West in San Francisco, ICAST in Orange County, and the MPI World Education Conference in Salt Lake City.
“As a trade show exhibitor for years, we found it incredibly frustrating being forced to pay thousands for internet access,” says Trade Show Internet co-founder Ian Framson. “The concept to provide exhibitors with an alternative seemed like common sense but simply didn’t exist – that is until now.”

CARAVAN SALON 2009 gives RV industry fresh stimulus
CHICAGO — As hoped, the RV sector received a positive boost by CARAVAN SALON DÜSSELDORF, the No. 1 Show for Motor Homes and Caravans. The recent staging in Düsseldorf, Germany, closed with a record participation of 161,200 visitors from 37 countries and good sales figures. A total of 580 exhibitors from 25 nations showcased their extensive selections of motor homes and RVs as well as accessories and travel destinations.
CARAVAN SALON 2009 fulfilled the RV industry’s expectations and demonstradted that after a difficult first half year business is getting better.
Wilhelm Niedergöker, Managing Director of the show’s organizer Messe Düsseldorf, commented: “161,200 visitors from 37 countries were registered at this year’s CARAVAN SALON (2008: 158,000) and clearly exceeded our expectations of 150,000 visitors. Furthermore, considering the current economic climate in Europe it is all the more positive to note that approximately 18,200 visitors came to Düsseldorf from abroad. CARAVAN SALON DÜSSELDORF is the sector’s foremost trade fair, traditionally accounting for roughly 10 percent of the industry’s annual turnover. This year CARAVAN SALON created a particularly important momentum - 49 percent of visitors came to CARAVAN SALON with intentions to buy.”
“The attendance and the number of deals closed, which both clearly surpassed our expectations, have rewarded the exhibitors’ commitment to CARAVAN SALON 2009. These results prove that the efforts of leisure vehicle manufacturers to develop lighter, more economic and lower-cost RVs also paid off,” stated Klaus Förtsch, President of the the Caravanning Industry Association (CIVD). “CARAVAN SALON 2009 underlines the recovery trends in the RV sector felt since the beginning of the second half of 2009. This strengthens the sector’s confidence to return to growth in 2010.”
The exhibitors at CARAVAN SALON 2009 were extremely satisfied with their participation. “The trade fair proves that there is a lot fo interest for RV’s and mobile homes. This year we had more first-time visitors but also many visitors who already own one of our vehicles and came to see us about specific issues, knowing exactly what they wanted,” explained Dr. Holger Siebert, General Manager of Eura Mobil GmbH. The trend towards higher-quality sales conversations at the stand with very well-informed visitors asking the right questions was also observed by Giovanni Marcon, Chairman of the Board at Knaus Tabbert GmbH, who also noted a shift from motor homes to RV as well as towards van campers and lightweight vehicles: “Customers pay the same attention to weight now with RVs as they do with motor homes. This is also in part due to the fact that the towing vehicles have less HP than they used to.”
CARAVAN SALON 2009 was charcaterize by an overall positive atmosphere. Hermann Pfaff, a member of the Hymer AG board, remarked: “This positive mood at the stands and among the dealers is really key because the dealers also carry it over to the post-show business. All in all the response has been very good and we are on the right track to achieving last year’s results and, hence, the target we have set ourselves.” Reinhard Löhner, General Manager of Concorde Reisemobile GmbH, was also delighted with the good sales and the visitors from outside of Germany: “For years we have had many customers from Belgium and France here. Now we also register ever more buyers from the Netherlands.”
After a tough year the suppliers also view the future with new optimism: “We do not expect a V-shaped business cycle but there are no signs of another downturn either. Quite on the contrary – we have heard at lot of encouragement from our European customers and believe that things will pick up again, especially starting in January/February,” explained Joachim Kinscher, Executive Vice-President of the Dometic Group and board member of the Caravanning Industry Association(CIVD). “On top of this, roughly one third of the trade fair visitors are interested in refitting existing vehicles or upgrading them, which is of crucial importance to us. We have received plenty of qualified enquiries for this. The total package makes us cautiously optimistic so that we go home from Düsseldorf in a clearly better mood than when we came here.”
Of particular interest were the first particle filters for refitting diesel engines, which were on display at this year’s CARAVAN SALON. “Visitors took great interest in the filter consulting provided by the CIVD. Mainly visitors who already own a vehicle wanted to know whether there was a refitting option, how expensive it is and which sticker the vehicle is given afterwards,” said Ralph Binder, Press Spokesman of the CIVD.
As in the past, TourNatur, Hiking Trade Fair, was held concurrently with CARAVAN SALON. A total of 275 exhibitors showcased the latest equipment and products for hiking to 33,500 visitors.
The next CARAVAN SALON DÜSSELDORF will take place from August 27 (trade visitor and media day) to September 5, 2010 (TourNatur will take place from September 3-5, 2010). For further information on visiting or exhibiting at CARAVAN SALON 2010 or TourNatur 2010, contact Messe Düsseldorf North America visit http://www.mdna.com.

Watch the masters and improve
By Barry Siskind
If you want to improve your golf game watch and learn from Tiger Wood as he drives, pitches and putts. Re-run each swing in slow motion and when you are ready practice…. practice…. practice.
While the chances of you or I ever being as good as the master is next to zero, the chances of improving our game, even a little bit, is pretty good.
Modeling the techniques of those who excel at what they do applies to all pursuits. Let’s say you want to improve your exhibit. Find to a guru then watch and learn. The problem is that that amongst organizations that choose exhibit marketing there is no one superstar. Many are pretty good, but those who consistently tower above the rest, year after year, are hard to find.
Does this mean improving your exhibit is a lost cause - not at all? In fact watching what other people do – both the good and the not so good – can be a fantastic method of gathering information that will make a powerful difference in your exhibit program.
