Shaq Vs
a noisy casino
I felt little sorry for NBA Superstar Shaquile O’Neal as he searched for a working microphone during a press conference at Planet Hollywood last week.
O’Neal was at PH to promote an episode of his reality-type television show that challenges his athletic abilities in sports other than basketball.
So far he has been beaten by Olympians Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh in volleyball and lost a football challenge against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Rothesberger. Soon he will be seen taking on Albert Pujols on the baseball diamond.
For this episode Shaq was in Las Vegas to take on semi-retired boxer Oscar de la Hoya in friendly, yet competitive boxing match
When I received an e-mail regarding this press conference I was mildly interested. It was curiosity that finally got the beast of me and I opted to RSVP and attend.
I would leave realizing that Planet Hollywood needs a course in planning a press conference.

Marketech tool provides decision assistance for exhibitors
WESTBORO, Mass. — Trade show and convention managers are making better exhibit and event decisions, thanks to an enhanced measurement tool now available from Marketech.
The upgraded trade show and event calculator — called “Measurement Made Easy” — provides access to essential metrics and drives fact-based decisions that improve exhibiting performance and results. The new computer-based tool is an expanded version of Marketech’s award-winning offering which originally launched in 2003.
“Budgets are coming under greater scrutiny than ever before, and trade show and event managers are under greater pressure to demonstrate results that justify their budgets,” said Marc Goldberg, founder and partner for Marketech. “‘Measurement Made Easy’ is an affordable tool that provides critical information exhibitors need to effectively plan their entire program or make important adjustments along the way.”
Marketech’s first generation calculator was named “Best New Product” by EXHIBITOR, the largest annual event in the tradeshow and corporate event industry. The original tool offered a range of pre-show planning and post-event measurement capabilities. The second generation calculator builds upon the success of the first, and includes 19 different components that compute everything from rule of thumb budgeting and preshow promotions to cost per visitor reached and sponsorship impressions.
“Measurement Made Easy” has the flexibility to measure, store and report results on a show-to-show basis as well as make year-to-year comparisons. The software can be purchased online via a single user lifetime license for $999.00. The tool is also available via a multiple users’ license. To request a demonstration, contact Marketech at 508.836.2633 or at info@marketech360.com.
“Marketech has helped exhibitors effectively measure and manage exhibit and event metrics for many years,” said Goldberg. “We’ve made important enhancements to our calculator based on user feedback. Ultimately this powerful piece of software helps our clients ensure they get the most from every exhibiting dollar they spend.”

Cyclonix creates one-of-a-kind
‘Car Condo’ interior for Blair Ventures
MORGAN HILL, Calif. — Cyclonix Inc, a creator of dynamic brand architecture, has designed, fabricated, and installed a custom “Car Condo” interior for Blair Ventures. This dynamic space, located inside of Club Auto Sport in San Jose, California, serves the combined functions of office/meeting space, storage area/showcase for the private auto collection of Larry Blair, ceo of Blair Ventures, and gallery of Blair’s own fine art photography.
Cyclonix’s solution for the 1,500 square foot space was to create vignettes for each of Blair’s cars: a McLaren F1 and a Porsche Carrera GT, as well as office and storage areas. Each vignette places one of Blair’s autos in front of a 10-foot-by-12-foot photo mural of one of Blair’s nature photos.

Dates set for UPAKOVKA/UPAK Italia
MOSCOW — UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA 2010 — 18th International Trade Fair Packaging Machinery, Packaging Production and Packaging Material — will be staged again at the ZAO Expocentr in Moscow from Jan 26-29, 2010.
The region’s leading trade fair for the industry will be organized by Messe Düsseldorf and its Russian subsidiary OOO Messe Düsseldorf Moscow in cooperation with the Italian event coordinator Centrexpo.
Exhibit categories will include packing machinery and devices, machinery for the production of packaging materials, machinery and equipment for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, bakery and confectionery industry as well as machinery and equipment for imprinting and finishing of packaging materials.
Even during the global economic crisis, Russia continues to be an attractive and expanding economic region. The Russian industry is no longer just interested in updating old machinery but focuses on increasing productivity in order to compete in the international market. As a result, a new market segment for mechanical engineering suppliers has developed in Russia, with high-performance facilities that provide faster production at better prices.
This development has created a demand for quality high-tech equipment. Especially the Russian packaging industry will benefit from this progress, since domestic producers of food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals benefit from the higher prices for foreign consumer goods during a crisis. Last year the Russian government announced that companies in the food industry will receive support with their expansion efforts in the domestic market - a positive signal for future investments.
A total of 330 exhibitors from 19 countries displayed their products at UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA was last held in January 2009. The event attracted 20,500 visitors from the Russian Federation and neighboring countries (the visitor number includes attendees at the concurrently held INTERPLASTICA trade fair), 86% of which had decision making authority. The majority of the attendees at UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA were from the food processing, chemical and pharmaceutical industry
Next year, INTERPLASTICA, 13th International Trade Fair Plastics and Rubber, will again be held together with UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA. For further information on visiting or exhibiting at UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA or INTERPLASTICA 2010, contact Messe Düsseldorf North America, at http://www.mdna.com.

GES designed Hectronic booth wins Best of Show at IPI Conference
LAS VEGAS — GES Exposition Services, a leader in exhibition and event services, announced that the GES-designed Hectronic booth won Best of Show at the recent International Parking Institute (IPI) Conference and Expo in Denver.
Hectronic, a German-based company, selected GES to design its 30 x 30 environment. The Hectronic booth was designed with an open feel, using arches, eye-catching graphics, spotlighting to highlight its clean, curved design, and red carpet, which allowed Hectronic’s booth to stand out on the show floor. The open design provided a welcoming environment for attendees to view and operate Hectronic’s easy, secure and convenient parking ticket machines as well as enjoy its German beer bar.
“This was our first opportunity to work with GES, and we were very pleased with the collaboration from start to finish,” said Hectronic Director of Parking System, Wolfgang Stanek. “The GES team took our ideas and created an award-winning booth that provided an open and welcoming space for existing and potential clients to see our latest parking ticket machines.”
“The Hectronic booth is an example of how the GES team can design a cost-competitive, award-winning product,” said GES Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Steve Moster. “Especially during these challenging economic times, clients appreciate that GES works hand-in-hand with them to design an environment that will represent their brand well, gain attendee attention and stay within budget.”
This is the second year in a row that a GES-designed booth has won Best of Show at the IPI Conference.
Hectronic has 250 employees and is headquartered in Germany/Bonndorf, and international subsidiaries in Switzerland/Brugg, France/Paris, Poland/Tschenstochau and India/Bangalore. Hectronic has international business contacts and access to over 150 distributors worldwide. The company has the full service and product range for parking, refueling, level measuring and tank truck management and when it comes to quality and innovation, Hectronic is right there at the top. TseTsee Launched as online forum for exhibit and event professionals
SAN FRANCISCO — TseTsee, an independent community Web site serving the social networking and information needs of the trade show industry and events industry, has launched at www.TseTsee.com.
TseTsee—which stands for “Trade Show and Event – Talk, Share, Experience & Evolve”—is a free service available to exhibitors, associations, show organizers, general contractors, service suppliers, exhibit designer/builders, agencies, attendees, facilities, and everyone else involved in the trade show and events industry.
TseTsee celebrated its launch at TS2 by giving away a minimum of ten Flip Camera digital video cameras to early adapter “citizen journalists” who register for TseTsee and submit a compelling story or item about an issue impacting the trade show industry. Winners will be those submissions judged by TseTsee management as the most compelling, newsworthy and useful to the community.
The focal point of TseTsee is “Tell Someone Else,” a community discussion forum. “Tell Someone Else” serves industry professionals of all types—corporate marketers, show organizers, agencies, and suppliers—and provides an environment to share thoughts, ideas, best practices, and concerns.
TseTsee founder and creator, Chris Glenn, hopes that TseTsee will unite the industry in tackling tough issues such as rising drayage and transportation costs, building show attendance, co-branding and co-location, cost efficiencies, and sustainability. “I’m convinced open communication between marketers and suppliers will result in greater cost efficiencies and help establish new industry standards,” Glenn said.|
As an independent entity, TseTsee is not owned or controlled by any other company or media outlet—which insures there is no underlying message or agenda. The idea for TseTsee was borne from Glenn’s experience managing event marketing as director of sales and marketing at Globe7 in San Francisco. When Glenn searched for real-time information on exhibit design and rental, drayage, and transportation logistics, and other program components, he discovered there was no single location resource. “I realized there was no social media site dedicated to the information needs of the industry, as well as few established standards,” says Glenn.
Before moving forward with TseTsee, Glenn attended trade shows and conferences to speak with industry professionals. “My research reinforced that there is currently no independent social media site for the industry—and that the industry can benefit immensely through the type of interaction this type of site can facilitate,” says Glenn.
TseTsee.com is free to users and will be supported through advertising. Glenn, a media industry veteran, has held executive positions at Globe7, The Wall Street Journal, and International Data Group.

Social networking and
face-to-face marketing
By Barry Siskind
In a recent issue of Trade Show Executive, I read an interesting article about Magic Stick, the winner of the TSE 2009 Innovation Award. Magic Stick is a small gadget, about the size of a computer memory stick that you carry with you. When you see someone also carrying a Magic Stick you can electronically exchange contact information. You each aim, push a button and voila you are networked.
Welcome to the age of High-Tec social networking whose first victims may very well be the handshake and a business card.
Twitter, Facebook, Web 2.0, SecondLife, LinkedIn, Flickr, LibraryThing, Ning, Jaiku, EventPeeps, are here to stay. There is nothing we can do about it nor should we for fear of being labeled Luddites. We should embrace social networking as a positive technology to help us build our personal networks.
