Interactive Intelligence CEO to deliver keynote at ITEXPO

Dr. BrownNORWALK, Conn. — Dr. Don Brown, founder, CEO, and chairman of the board for Interactive Intelligence will deliver a keynote address to attendees of ITEXPO West 2009 in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 3:30 p.m. titled “Business Takeover – The Day Your Phone System Runs Your Business.”

Dr. Brown will offer contact centers and enterprises alike insights into using unified communications technologies such as presence, queuing and real-time quality monitoring to not only communications-enable business processes, but to fully automate them.

“In this economic climate especially, organizations are struggling to justify the deployment of unified communications,” Brown said. “By using unified communications technologies to actually move, prioritize and track work through a given process, CIOs can finally show significant and measurable benefits.”

Dr. Brown founded Interactive Intelligence in 1994 to develop a standards-based, single-platform “unified” communications solution that would eliminate the cost and complexity introduced by multipoint products. Today, about 3,000 customers use the Interactive Intelligence all-in-one IP communications software suite.

Interactive Intelligence is the third successful company that Dr. Brown has founded. The first was sold to EDS; the second, Software Artistry, went public in 1995 and was subsequently acquired by IBM. As CEO at Interactive Intelligence, Dr. Brown oversees the company’s day-to-day operational responsibilities, including the product and technical direction for the more than 600-person Company.

“The conference content we’ve assembled for ITEXPO West will provide attendees with an unrivaled educational opportunity, and we’re pleased to have visionaries like Dr. Don Brown share their expertise regarding unified communications technologies for enterprises and contact centers,” said Rich Tehrani, TMC president and ITEXPO conference chairman.

“Anyone interested in learning more about UC solutions or next-generation contact center technologies should plan to see this session at ITEXPO,” added Tehrani.

In addition to Dr. Brown’s appearance, ITEXPO West 2009 features keynotes from the following industry leaders – ShoreTel, Alvarion, Sprint, and Clearwire.

Conference registration is open, and additional information can be found by CLICKING HERE.

AUSTIN, Texas — Lakeway Resort and Spa will launch this month, a charitable incentive program for meeting planners to book their meetings at the Austin area Dolce Resort and impact the lives of returning soldiers.

The resort has teamed up with the U.S. Army Bass Anglers in support of the organization Returning Heroes Home.

LakewayThe organization has been working to raise $1.5 million to construct a new Warrior Family & Support Center to help meet the emotional and physical needs of wounded heroes of all military service backgrounds. The center will make great strides in the rehabilitation of America’s “Wounded Warriors” and their families by providing an environment that fosters healing and coping with war related disabilities.

“With Ft. Hood, one of the largest military bases, as our neighbor, our staff has come to truly understand the sacrifice that these men give for their country with each year of service. Starting in August and running through the end of 2010, all clients that mention promotional code “HERO” in the booking process will have the opportunity for up to two different contributions to be made in their organization’s name to the Returning Heroes Home program. Based on a meeting with ten guest rooms or more, and keeping with the Resort’s “On the Lake” culture, complete bass fishing tackle will be donated to the heroes for recreational use. For meetings with over 25 guest rooms, a donation of 2.5 percent of rooms revenue will be donated to the efforts to phase II of building the support center.

“We provide our clients a superior conference product, attentive staff, and enthusiastic meeting planners, all on the lake,” says Mike Islava, Director of Sales and Marketing. “Now we can also supply them a way to give back as well.”

APEX/ASTM Green Meetings, Events Standards final draft ready

ALEXANDRIA, Va. —  The Convention Industry Council (CIC)’s Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) Panel on Green Meeting and Event Practices released the final draft standards for green meetings and events for review and comment by the meetings industry and to the ASTM International for review.

CIC logoThe process of developing green standards has been a partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) and APEX to answer the need in the meeting and event industry for a uniform measurement of environmental performance.

By submitting the standards to the ASTM for approval, the standards developed will be accredited standards.

The APEX panel and hundreds of volunteers from the meetings industry, government, international organizations and NGOs have devoted countless hours of discussion and refinement over the past two years to draft what will be a very well planned first step in solidifying green meeting practices.

“These standards are an attempt to create a level playing field of what constitutes "green" for the industry. While the standards are voluntary, demand and use by planners and competition will drive adoption,” states Karen Kotowski, CMP, CAE, COO of the Convention Industry Council. “It is exciting to see these standards coming to life and the hard work of so many, nearing completion. Like all APEX standards, they will not remain static but will incorporate revisions as necessary to maintain relevancy. However, this has been the first and most difficult part of the
journey. The panel and all the volunteers should be commended.”

Nine individual topic areas comprise the entire standard and nine separate committees were charged with developing the standards. Those topic areas include Accommodations, Audio Visual, Communication, Exhibits, Food and Beverage, On-site Office, Destinations, Meeting Venue and Transportation. The draft standards will now go out to the industry for review and comment through APEX City Discussion Groups and a blog as well as to the ASTM International for its review process.

City Discussion Groups, events akin to town hall meetings, will be held over the course of the next few weeks in the following cities: Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, DC, Ft Meyer, Winnipeg, San Antonio, Denver and San Francisco. Those interested in participating in a discussion group may register through the APEX website at www.apexsolution.org. For those not in proximity to a discussion group, the APEX virtual blog site provides for greater access and participation. The draft standards may be accessed and feedback given at http://wp.apexsolution.org.

As the Green Meeting and Event standard goes through ASTM’s committees and the APEX processes, suggested changes and feedback will be reviewed by the committees and incorporated if appropriate and then submitted in final to ASTM. All comments, whether by City Discussion Group or by blog, are due September 11th in order to be considered before the standards are submitted to ASTM in final format. It is anticipated that the final standards approved by both ASTM and the APEX Commission will be complete by year-end.

NTP pledges $150,000 to the Exhibition Industry Foundation

NTPDALLAS The Exhibition Industry Foundation announced a donation of $150,000 from National Trade Productions for the purpose of supporting the recently launched International Center for Exhibitor and Event Marketing.

As announced earlier this year, NTP, owner and producer of TS2, and the International Association of Exhibitions and Events entered a cooperative agreement to collaborate and provide programming at both organizations' annual meetings to meet the full, wide-ranging programming needs of exhibitors, event marketers and show organizers.

ExhibitionIndustry

An important component of this collaboration is the creation of The International Center for Exhibitor and Event Marketing (The Center) which launched July 21 at TS2 in Chicago and now includes more than 9,000 members who have either joined directly or through their association with IAEE, the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) and/or the Exhibitor Service Contractors Association (ESCA).

"On behalf of the entire EIF Board of Trustees, I want to express my gratitude, and thank Bob Harar and TS2 for the extraordinary support that they have provided to EIF,” said EIF Chair Michael Cooke. By supporting the work of The Center, this is yet another way that The Foundation continues to add value to the exhibitions and events industry. This very generous donation from NTP allows for more positive, industry-wide change driven by collaboration and support of the important work EIF is doing. The creation of The Center will offer long-term value at a time when greater resources are a necessity and the constraints of the economy are a reality."

NTP Chairman Bob Harar's vision for The Center is to create the principal, internationally recognized organization representing exhibitors and event marketers. It provides education, networking, data, research and an international platform for the exhibitor and event marketing professional community, primarily through a state-of-the-art Web site.

Hospitalar

Record results at Hospitalar 2009

SÃN PAULO, Brazil — The recent staging of HOSPITALAR 2009, International Fair of Products, Equipment, Service and Technology for Hospitals, Laboratories, Pharmacies, Clinics and Medical Offices, in São Paulo, Brazil, closed with new visitor, exhibitor and sales results records. A total of 86,000 professional visits from more than 60 countries was recorded — a 10 percent growth compared to the 2008 staging. The amount of deals and sales by the exhibitors reached US$ 2.5 billion, an increase of 7 percent.

HOSPITALAR 2009 was the largest edition of the trade fair with 1,200 exhibiting companies from 32 countries on 882,600 square feet of exhibit space.

Hospitalar logoAccording to Dr. Waleska Santos, Founder and President of HOSPITALAR, the trade fair’s success was determined by many positive facts: the size of the event has increased by 20 percent  the number of visitors has grown significantly and the attendees were more qualified. But the crucial issue was the fact that the Brazilian healthcare market is growing, based on the significant investment increase hospitals and the medical industries received in order to expand and improve the quality of their services. "In spite of the retraction in the global economy, especially in the U.S. and in Europe, the healthcare market in Brazil shows a positive performance, both in public and private sectors", commented Dr. Waleska Santos.

The Brazilian imports of medical products and equipment (not including pharmaceuticals) grew 33 percent from 2007 to 2008, with an increase from US$ 2.7 billion to US$ 3.6 billion. The Brazilian companies also registered growth in sales. Companies associated with the Brazilian Association of the Medical-Dental Industry (ABIMO) reported US$ 3.2 billion in sales in 2008, 5 percent more than in 2007.

“The major Brazilian hospitals have not reduced investments in expansion, improvement and update of their facilities, thus keeping the market in motion,” sadi Dr. Waleska Santos.

More than 400 of the exhibitors at HOSPITALR 2009 were from outside of Brazil, including firms from  Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Pakistan, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan as well as Turkey, Uruguay and the U.S. A total of 19 of the 39 U.S. exhibitors showcased their products within the successful U.S. Pavilion, organized by Messe Dusseldorf North America.

RMJM designs Turkey’s first ‘green’ development in financial district

NEW YORK — International architecture company RMJM has announced details of the U.S. $1 billion development it is designing in Istanbul’s new residential and business district, which will be one of the ‘greenest’ projects in Turkey.

The luxury 372,000-square-meter development on a site totalling 107,000 square meters – being designed by RMJM’s New York and Istanbul studios – will be located in the Atasehir district of Istanbul which the Turkish government intends to transform into the country’s new financial district and business center.

Set on a highly visible site that features panoramic views stretching from the Bosphorus Strait in the west to the Princes’ Islands and the Sea of Marmara to the south, the 372,000-square-meter project for Turkish real estate development company VARYAP, part of Varlibas Group International, includes a 60-story tower, 1,500 residential units, a five-star hotel, offices and conference facilities with landscaped public areas and parking facilities. The project, which is expected to serve 20,000 people, is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

The RMJM design team intends to create an iconic complex that takes an innovative approach to planning and sustainability. The development is designed to achieve the LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and, as such, would be the first, sustainable mixed-use development of its kind in Turkey.

The designers carefully analyzed the local site conditions and embraced the topography, climate and surrounding context to maximize the site’s natural potential and inform building orientation and landscaping. This also ensured panoramic views beyond the site, while minimizing solar heat gain to the building facades.

Active ‘green’ design features include rainwater collection sites and facilities to optimize water usage and reduce energy consumption, wind turbine technology, cooling water pools that enhance the external landscape and a co-generation plant that will produce electricity for the development. The unique context and culture of Istanbul is incorporated into the design including a spectral tiled facade, ranging from terracotta to blue to white.

“We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to create a landmark community in Istanbul’s up-and-coming financial district,” said Chris Jones, RMJM Design Principal who leads RMJM’s new Istanbul office. “RMJM’s design not only addresses Istanbul’s culture, climate, architectural heritage and cosmopolitan attitude but also sets a new standard for sustainable design for Turkey. Sustainable design is no longer a trend but a necessity and our client VARYAP embraced the idea from the start.”

M. Erdinç Varlibas, CEO of VARYAP, said: “Our aim is to ensure that we leave a better world to future generations and we believe that the VARYAP MERIDIAN project will raise the standards of the Turkish real estate market generally. The unique design reflects our cultural heritage as well as a true consciousness of the environment, which we strive for in all our projects.”

In addition to creating a new business center, the VARYAP MERIDIAN project offers new types of housing that will bring value to the community. The residential section features 1,500 flats of 450 different types, ranging from studios to five-bedroom penthouse apartments.

The Atasehir district is to become Istanbul’s new financial center – potentially surpassing the existing financial center in the Levent district of the city. Development of Atasehir, which is located on the “Asian side” of the city, was jump-started in 2007 when Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan instructed the corporate headquarters of several banks to relocate from Ankara to Istanbul in an effort to create more synergy and advance the financial sector. The banks of Ziraat Bankası, Halkbank and Vakıfbank are all expected to relocate from Ankara, as are the Turkish Central Bank, Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency and Capital Markets Board (SPK).

From a transportation standpoint, Atasehir is ideal for development as it is located at the intersection of Sabiha Gökçen Airport and Istanbul's new subway projects, and at the intersection of the two main roads between Istanbul and Ankara. The Mass Housing Administration is directing the planning of the center.

APCO Audio Visual, Inc. and EDGE MEDIA GROUP announced a strategic alliance that will result in new revenue generating sponsorship opportunities for Trade Show and Event Organizers. This partnership will also enhance the interactivity between the Exhibitor and the Attendee.

“As part of this alliance, EDGE and APCO are taking sponsorships to the next level by providing free standing, ECO-Friendly Kiosk units,” said Jeff Nussdorf, President of EDGE MEDIA GROUP. These innovative units will be strategically located in high-traffic areas of an event or exhibition. In turn, exhibitors will have the opportunity to present their products and services in a dynamic eye-catching manner, immediately grabbing the attention of the viewer, while driving traffic to the sponsor’s booth.

With respect to 3D Autostereoscopic media technology, itself, the technology displays three-dimensional images without the use of typical 3D glasses or any other type of headgear. “In other words, this technology produces a depth perception in the viewer — even though the image is produced by using a flat LCD device,” explains JC Diaz, President of APCO AUDIO VISUAL INC.

Moreover, APCO can take a company’s existing 2D video, PowerPoint or other digital media presentations and add dynamic 3D Autostereoscopic templates to them. APCO can also create completely new 3D content.

Sponsorships at Trade Shows are one of the fastest growing marketing techniques; thus, these sponsorships provide a competitive edge for Exhibitors who choose to take advantage of them. After all, these sponsorships can increase an exhibiting company’s visual recognition, booth traffic, and overall awareness — as well as provide the ability to quantify ROI.

In addition to the 3D Autostereoscopic media technology, APCO offers complete exhibit services, production services and projector rentals for conventions and trade shows, exhibits, product rollouts, web-casts, seminars, general sessions and meetings. The company stocks the best A/V equipment rentals of plasma and LCD Display Monitors, Video Projectors, Computers (desktop and laptop), Staging and Lighting, Networking, Audio, Video and anything else that is needed to make events go exactly as planned. Furthermore, they can handle anything — from a small meeting to a large tradeshow event. APCO’s main offices are located in Orlando, New Orleans and Las Vegas.

Social networking and
face-to-face marketing

By Barry Siskind

In a recent issue of Trade Show Executive, I read an interesting article about Magic Stick, the winner of the TSE 2009 Innovation Award. Magic Stick is a small gadget, about the size of a computer memory stick that you carry with you. When you see someone also carrying a Magic Stick you can electronically exchange contact information. You each aim, push a button and voila you are networked.
Welcome to the age of High-Tec social networking whose first victims may very well be the handshake and a business card.

Twitter, Facebook, Web 2.0, SecondLife, LinkedIn, Flickr, LibraryThing, Ning, Jaiku, EventPeeps, are here to stay. There is nothing we can do about it nor should we for fear of being labeled Luddites. We should embrace social networking as a positive technology to help us build our personal networks.
