Daniel Fenton begins term as DMAI chair

ATLANTA — Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) incoming Chairman of the Board of Directors Daniel Fenton took the reins Thursday to lead DMAI, the world’s largest resource for official destination marketing organizations, launching a new campaign to establish national partnerships with arts, hotel and labor groups.

Fenton“These critical partnerships tie directly to the industry’s focus on relevancy and advocacy both at the national and local level,” said Daniel Fenton, CEO of Team San Jose. “I am proud to represent the tourism industry and look forward to strengthening DMAI’s position and supporting Convention and Visitor Bureaus and destination marketing organizations across the nation.”

Fenton leads Team San Jose, a $US20 million organization that acts as both Convention Center and Cultural Facilities manager as well as the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau (SJCVB). This unique model has increased revenue for the SJCVB and Cultural Facilities by 84 percent since Team San Jose began management in 2004 and resulted in a one team approach for all customer service needs for meeting and event planners visiting San Jose. Created in 2003 after the City of San Jose solicited proposals for management of the Convention Center and multiple theaters, Team San Jose is lead by a Board of Directors representing arts, hotel and local labor union groups.

“Local tourism’s success takes the commitment of key stakeholders working together and San Jose is an example where this has worked well,” said Fenton. “This success also has great potential at the national level and the national campaign will give DMAI members tools to stay relevant and support advocacy efforts to move the industry forward.”

“Dan is a thought leader in the industry,” said Maura Gast, Executive Director of the Irving Texas CVB and Immediate Past Chair of DMAI Board of Directors, “by forming Team San Jose, he is changing the way our industry approaches customer service. I know he will apply the same thinking and skill as he leads DMAI over the next year.”

The association, under Fenton’s leadership will also focus on technology and social responsibility. These priorities follow a key report, lead by Gast, coined The Future’s Study, launched last year highlighting these areas as priorities for the organization and encouraging its membership to increase the knowledge of the industry  through supporting the nation’s economic growth. Travel and tourism is one of the world’s largest service exports and largest employers. In the United States, travel and tourism is the third biggest retail sales sector. The industry contributes more than US$599 billion annually to the nation’s economy and generates US$99.4 billion in tax revenues (2004 figures from the Travel Industry Association).

Ernest N. Morial Convention Center announces new venue for festivals

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center announced a 26-acre festival venue, located on Henderson Street at the end of Convention Center Blvd, adjacent to Hall J and immediately in front of the newly re-located Mardi Gras World. The plan brings event activity to the property that is the location of the Center’s planned Phase IV expansion, on hold until the demand returns for further development.

The venue, dubbed “Festival Park at the Convention Center,” has all the elements that are important to stage successful festivals:  high visibility and easy access, ample and adjacent parking, hotels with a variety of price points, water and power.

“New Orleans is known as one of the greatest cities for festivals and they play an important role in attracting visitors who support our economy. There are several opportunities throughout the year when a festival can bridge the gap between seasons and major conventions, said Bob Johnson, president/general manager of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. “We’re glad to provide another venue for people to enjoy themselves,” he said.

The Louisiana Tailgate & BBQ Festival, appealing to every sports fan, outdoorsman and foodie in the region, recently announced plans to use Festival Park for the August 21-23 first annual event. As the region readies for the oncoming football and hunting seasons, the Festival could easily become an August boon to hotels in the years to come. The festival will feature food, music, football and family fun. On the line-up are The Big Easy BBQ Challenge, a tailgate competition, tailgate product exposition, and a football fan-fest. For more details, go to www.louisianatailgate.com.

Already announced for Festival Park is the Saturday, September 5th, Project 3090 Music Festival. The festival is billed as an environmentally conscious festival and will run their stages on solar and wind turbine power and offer paperless green tickets, recycling, carbon offsets and more. Bike Week New Orleans is making plans to use the site for major programming when it returns next year, May 4-9.

Other considerations for Festival Park are as an outdoor extension of the 1.1 million square feet of indoor exhibit space. A number of large conventions require outdoor exhibit space, and may now be more attracted to New Orleans.

The Tradeshow Network Marketing Group gives back

T-shirtsST. CHARLES, Ill. — The Tradeshow Network Marketing Group focused their efforts in July on cleaning up their exhibit storage facility to make room for their new storage clients and located about a hundred brand new golf shirts from a variety of sources.

They contacted all the owners and after investigating their options, decided to donate the shirts to an organization that could really use some new shirts in this special time of need. That organization of choice was the Matthew 25 Ministries because they provide basic necessities to those most in need.

“We feel real good about giving back to the community in this time of desperation for some,” said Chris Robert, President of The Tradeshow Network. The shirts have all been wrapped and boxed and will be shipped to Matthew 25 Ministries this month. This is just another way that The Tradeshow Network Marketing Group is giving back to the community.

Hawaii Tourism Association actively identifying emerging markets

HONOLULU — The Hawaii Tourism Association has announced it has been successful in its goal to actively identify non-traditional markets that could be potentially lucrative for in-bound tourism for Hawaii.

“From the beginning, and one of the reasons why we started HiTA in the first place was because of overwhelming response that we have received after we did our initial survey utilizing eTurboNews’ readers. Some of the responses were quite predictable, while others were surprising,” said HiTA President Juergen Thomas Steinmetz.

According to Steinmetz, Russia has been identified as a market that could potentially bring in big business for Hawaii tourism. He said Hawaii can be accessed by the Russian market both through the mainland US, and also through Korea, Japan and with Hainan Air starting also through Beijing.

He added that the Russian market’s per day spending overseas is one of the highest of any tourism-spending nation.

That is why HiTA has sought the help of various organizations and entities, including the U.S. Department of Commerce Export Council. “Embassies and Consulates in more than 85 locations are ready to assist Hawaii with data, active support about Hawaii’s most important export, which is tourism,” adds Steinmetz, who has recently been selected as the chair of the subcommittee for tourism and member of the U.S. Department of Commerce Export Council for the US Pacific Region.

Among HiTA’s initiatives in luring the Russian market, according to Steinmetz, is the organization’s upcoming participation in three important trade events in Moscow from September 22-25, 2009. “One event is for the MICE (Meeting and Incentive business), luxury travel and leisure travel,” the HiTA president said.

Social networking and
face-to-face marketing

By Barry Siskind

In a recent issue of Trade Show Executive, I read an interesting article about Magic Stick, the winner of the TSE 2009 Innovation Award. Magic Stick is a small gadget, about the size of a computer memory stick that you carry with you. When you see someone also carrying a Magic Stick you can electronically exchange contact information. You each aim, push a button and voila you are networked.
Welcome to the age of High-Tec social networking whose first victims may very well be the handshake and a business card.

Twitter, Facebook, Web 2.0, SecondLife, LinkedIn, Flickr, LibraryThing, Ning, Jaiku, EventPeeps, are here to stay. There is nothing we can do about it nor should we for fear of being labeled Luddites. We should embrace social networking as a positive technology to help us build our personal networks.
